ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Creighton snapped the New Mexico volleyball team's eight-match Comcast Lobo Invitational winning streak with a three-game sweep (30-27, 30-28, 30-12) in the final match of the tournament Saturday night to claim the invitational crown. UNM, Creighton and Northern Colorado all finished the tournament with 2-1 records, but the Bluejays won on the tiebreaker, which is the ratio of points for/against vs. all opponents. The Lobos won the invitational in 2002 and 2003. New Mexico was looking for its third straight Comcast title and would have won the tournament with a win over Creighton. But after an impressive opening weekend in which the Lobos won their first two matches in five games, the Bluejays cruised past UNM to win the tournament in the deciding game. The Lobos placed two players on the all-tournament team. Sophomore Kelly Therkelsen put down 44 kills (3.38 pg) to go along with 13 blocks to earn all-tournament honors. Freshman Samie Weber led all players in the tournament with 18 blocks and hit .346 (28K-10E-52TA) in the three matches to also make the team. The New Mexico volleyball team returns to action next weekend as it travels to Newark, Del., for the Delaware Tournament. UNM opens tournament play Friday, Sept. 10 vs. George Washington at 12 p.m. EDT.
