Alcorn State Lady Braves vs. The University of New Mexico Lobos
Head Coach Don Flanagan
On the game:
"Obviously we thought they were going to be a pressing team, which they did the whole game. We worked a little bit on press breaker. I thought we did well with that this time. We got a lot of people playing time. We got five people in double figures. We shot 47 percent so we can live with that. That is pretty good. Shot 78 percent from the free throw line, thought that was pretty good. Got back 14 on boards I liked that. Twenty-two turnovers was too many. We got a little bit emotional a few times, upset at situations and then turning the ball over. Overall, we got to play a lot of people and it was good for us, obviously. Overall I think it was a good game for us to get under our belt and get ready for the next game which is tomorrow."
"(Alcorn) was obviously undersized, one of the hardest things I had was match-ups. Five foot tall, 5'5, 5'6, 5'8. Now it is hard to match-up. I can't even play a post player and their tallest player was 5'11. What I liked was they had quickness and thought we ran the floor with them. I thought we showed some speed ourselves. Defensively, my main concern was we were fouling them and creating free throws. They weren't scoring field goals they were scoring free throws. We showed a little bit of undisciplined defense a couple of times, well more than a couple of times, but I thought we did a little bit better in the second half at that and I am happy to have everybody play some pretty good minutes."
Senior Amanda Adamson:
"They were tough. It is always hard to play girls that are a little shorter than you, but that are so quick because you really have to stay low on defense. That was a challenge, but it made us work harder and get lower on defense, so it was good to play a team like that. To beat a team like that you have to play hard the whole game and that is what it took. Just working hard as a team and getting better at team things. Three games is definitely better than three practices. I am excited to play. I love games and that is how I keep my energy up, so I think the girls can agree."
On adjusting to playing a new team tomorrow:
"It comes down to playing hard as a team and understanding who you are playing. If you are playing bigger girls who run a half-court game, you have to focus on your half-court defense. If you are playing the quick, up tempo, you have to get back in transition. I think we are going to adjust fine tomorrow to a team and come out and play hard."
Freshman Lauren Taylor:
On first collegiate start:
"It was awesome. It was great to play in the Pit. It was great to get our first win in the Pit. Before the game we said we wanted to start the season out right, so that is what we went out and did. I think I have got most of the nerves out, exhibition games help a lot. I try not to think of it as anything different, play hard in exhibition, play hard in a real game."
