USAF ACADEMY, COLO. - The University of New Mexico junior varsity men's golf team could not hold onto their 36-hole lead and finished third at the 18-team Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational. The Lobos shot a final round 303 to finish at six over par (287-280-303=870), 11 strokes behind team champion Texas-San Antonio, who finished at five under par (282-287-290=859).
Individually for New Mexico, Tyler Symons led the way moving up from seventh to tie for third at two under par (72-69-73=214). Jeb Gruenberger also finished in the top 20 with a tie for 16th at two over (72-68-78=218). Other UNM JV scores: Miguel Griego tied for 23rd at +4 (73-73-74=220), Chase Thomas finished at +5 (73-70-78=221) tied for 26th and Anderson finished at +8 (70-75-79=224) tied for 40th.
Individual medalist honors went to the 36-hole leader Mike Mezei of the University of Texas-San Antonio at nine under (66-71-70=207), with Luke Swilor of Utah finishing three strokes back.
The UNM junior varsity men's golf team returns to action on Oct. 20-21 at the WNMU Fall Intercollegiate in Ruidoso, New Mexico.
