2012 Fidelity Investments - UNM Lobos Scholar-Athlete Banquet

By Richard Stevens - Senior Writer/GoLobos.com

To twist a phrase from Charles Dickens: "It was the best of athletes. It was the best of students."

And it was only the best of times for Lobo student-athletes and University of New Mexico administrators and educators, who gathered in the UNM Student Union Building Monday night for the 2012 Fidelity Investments-UNM Lobos Scholar-Athlete Banquet.

The duality theme was heavy in Dickens' "Tale of Two Cities" and that duality theme also was emphasized Monday night as the finest New Mexico student-athletes were honored at the annual awards ceremony for their good work in the classroom.

There was no electronic scoreboard projecting winners in the SUB ballroom, but there were winners marching up to the podium to accept their recognition. There also will be a lot of communities winning when the majority of these Lobos jump full-force into the work force.

It's not an easy thing to be a student-athlete, and to achieve at a high level both academically and athletically reflects a goal-oriented individual possessing an exceptional work ethic.

Maybe that's why UNM's 2011 Federal Graduation Rate for athletics was 61 percent - an all-time UNM high and above the graduation rate for the UNM student body.

"It takes a special person to balance the demanding commitment to both their chosen sport and their education," said Tim Cass, UNM's Senior Associate Athletics Director, who also was a former Lobo tennis player and Lobo tennis coach. "These Lobos provide us with a special night that allows us to recognize them as scholar-athletes.

"This event is as significant to our department as any athletic contest held during the season."

UNM's annual scholar-athlete banquet recognizes the Lobo student-athlete, who managed to compete in a sport while maintaining a 3.2 or higher GPA in the classroom. And, like in sports, there were a few scholars, who managed to excel among their scholastic peers.

The Lobo Club Student-Athlete of The Year Awards went to Lobo women's soccer player Jael Fanning while golfer John Catlin took the men's award. The Lobo Club Athlete of The Year awards includes community service as well as academic excellence.

There were six Lobos recognized as graduating seniors, who managed to graduate with a 4.00 GPA: Maria Dudley, swimming; Alexis Ball, women's soccer; Jael Fanning, women's soccer; Kelly Williamson, volleyball; Chad Clark, Men's track & field; Lauren Taylor, women's basketball.

The Athletic Director's Cup for the highest team GPA went to the women's ski team. The Athletic Council Most Improved Award (GPA jump from 2011 to 2012) went to the Lobo men's soccer team.

The UNM Bookstore fifth-year scholarship winners were swimmer Maria Dudley and women's basketball player, Lauren Taylor.

The 2012 Fidelity Investments All-Academic team also was recognized. This team honors the individual who obtains the highest GPA on his or her team. The winners were:

"It's important that we showcase these academic accomplishments within our department, to the university community and to the public," said Henry Villegas, UNM's assistant athletics director in charge of academics.

"The academic success of our students is a source of pride and is tremendously important to the University of New Mexico and to the athletic department."

New Mexico led the Mountain West in scholar-athletes (3.5 or higher GPA) with 216 honored in 2010-11. At Monday's banquet, UNM honored athletes with a 3.20 or higher GPA:
