Watch Senior's Race

Stanford- University of New Mexico distance runners, junior Ruth Senior and senior Nicky Archer recorded a sensational day Friday, at the Stanford Invitational. Both smashed the previous school record in their respective races. Senior clocked a 15:57.32 in the 5,000 meters, shaving over 19 seconds off the previous record (16:16.9), while Archer killed the previous 10,000-meter record (34:06.9) by 34 seconds running a 33:32.83.

The previous 5K record was held by Kathy Pfiefer, set in 1984. Senior sliced the 26 year-old record finishing fifth in section 1 of the women's 5K.

"I am very happy," Senior said. "I knew it was going to be fast. I wasn't expecting to run that quick. I didn't think about the time I just ran it. I can't believe I just ran that fast."

The Norwich, England product sliced her previous lifetime best (16:39.49) by 42 seconds.

"I ran a PR indoors in Seattle and I've been training well since then," Senior said. "I felt good, felt comfortable, I just ran. I was quite shocked to see my time when I crossed the finish line."

Archer, who set her previous career-best at the same meet last year, was 60 seconds better this time around. The Cheshire, England product broke Pfiefer's 10K record also set in 1984.

"It went better than expected," Archer said. "The group was perfect for me. I knew I was in shape and wanted to go a sub 34 and I did very well. Training has been going well. I have been working hard."

Fellow Lobo, Ashley Gibson set a new personal best in the 5K, running 16:35.67. Gibson shaved 22 seconds off her previous career-best, 17:07.55.

On the men's side junior Brock Hagerman finished third in section 2 of the 10K, clocking a time of 29:20.09, setting a new personal best.

The sprinters, jumpers and throwers are in action today at the UTEP Invitational.
