Lobos and Cowgirls Meet in MWC Semifinals

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of New Mexico women's basketball team will try to earn a spot in the MWC Tournament championship game on Friday afternoon, as they take on the Cowgirls of the University of Wyoming in the semifinals. The Lobos are 22-8 on the season, while the Cowgirls are 21-8 overall. The two teams split the season series with each team winning on its home court. Tip-off from the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nev., is schedule for 1:00 PM (MST) and can be seen on the mtn. or heard on 610 The Sports Animal.

TONIGHT'S GAME: Tonight's game features the Lobos of the University of New Mexico as they travel to Las Vegas, Nev., to play the Cowgirls of the University of Wyoming in the semifinals of the MWC Tournament.

SCOUTING THE LOBOS: New Mexico is 22-8 this season and 11-5 in the MWC with victories over Florida Atlantic (74-44), No. 25 Texas (63-60), Georgia Southern (64-43), Siena (78-39), New Mexico State (81-47 and 65-45), at Arizona (76-63), Sam Houston State (77-41), UCLA (72-63), Northern Arizona (62-51), Colorado State twice (73-42, 77-66), Air Force twice (60-46, 57-47), UNLV twice (77-56, 80-52), San Diego State twice (76-46, 67-48), Wyoming (50-43), Utah (73-65), BYU (80-75 OT) and TCU (75-54) and losses to No. 12/13 Arizona State (67-49), Nebraska (66-59), No. 7/8 Oklahoma (80-58), Wyoming (54-51), Utah (49-48), BYU (63-59), TCU (67-43) and UNLV (70-59). UNM is led in scoring by senior Julie Briody at 15.6 ppg and rebounding by junior Dionne Marsh at 6.7 rpg. Leading the Lobos in assists is senior Katie Montgomery at 3.4 apg.

SCOUTING THE COWGIRLS: Wyoming is 21-8 on the year and 11-5 in conference with wins over San Francisco (71-58), Northern Colorado (76-46), Colorado (68-49), Charlotte (77-55), Nevada (80-71), Idaho State (79-58), Western State (69-56), Utah State (62-43), Idaho (68-45), New Mexico (54-51), San Diego State twice (71-47, ), TCU twice (66-51, 61-50), Colorado State twice (78-66 OT, 72-37), Air Force twice (64-43, 64-35), Utah twice (56-55, 62-53) and UNLV (85-59) and losses to Kansas State (68-62), Montana twice (70-59, 79-72), UNLV (51-46), BYU twice (55-52, 69-62), New Mexico (50-43) and San Diego State (55-47). UW is led in scoring by Justyna Podziemska and Hanna Zavecz at 12.9 ppg. Podziemska also leads the Cowgirls in rebounding at 6.4 rpg and Zavecz leads them in assists at 3.6 apg.

THE COACHES: UNM is led by head coach Don Flanagan who enters his 12th season at New Mexico. Flanagan is 261-112 at UNM. The head coach of Wyoming is Joe Legerski who is in his fourth season as a Cowgirl with a record of 69-47.

THE SERIES: This will be the third meeting between New Mexico and Wyoming, with each team winning on their home court. This will be the 52nd meeting overall with UNM holding a 31-20 advantage and is 1-0 on a neutral court.
