LAS VEGAS, Nev. - New Mexico senior Samantha Hughes went 2-for-4 with four RBI Friday but it wasn't enough as the Lobos fell to UNLV, 8-7, in eight innings. UNM hit three home runs in the game and rallied late to force extra innings. The Lobos drop their first conference road game and will head to San Diego to face the Aztecs of SDSU Saturday and Sunday. UNLV (24-13, 1-2 MWC) scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning on two hits and four UNM miscues. The Lobos had seven errors in the game.
Lobo senior Samantha Hughes hit a two-run homer in the top of the third inning to tie the game. Hughes blasted a shot to left field that scored freshman Shenise Cox. Cox reached on a double down the left field line.
The Rebels regained the lead in the bottom of the third after scoring an unearned run. The Lobos allowed the leadoff batter to reach bases on an error and she eventually came around to score.
UNLV scored two runs in the fifth on back-to-back singles and had a two-run triple in the sixth to jump out to a big lead after six innings.
The Lobos were down 7-4 heading into the top of the seventh. UNM loaded the bases with no outs and set the stage for Hughes. Hughes singled down the left field line scoring two runs. Gilmore tied the game at 7-7 with a sacrifice fly to right field allowing freshman Jessica Lujan-Dresslar to score.
UNLV won the game in the bottom of the eighth inning with a two-out RBI single.
New Mexico travels to San Diego State Saturday to face the Aztecs at 7 p.m. MT. The Lobos and SDSU will concluded the two-game series Sunday at 2 p.m. MT. Gametracker will be available for both games on www.GoLobos.com.
