The University of New Mexico softball team opens up conference play on the road this weekend against San Diego State and UNLV, April 9-11. New Mexico starts conference play Friday at 7 p.m. MT in San Diego, Calif. against the Aztecs at the SDSU Softball Complex. The Lobos then travel to Las Vegas, Nev., to take on the Rebels, Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. MT at the Eller Media Stadium. New Mexico looks to improve over last year's Mountain West Conference record. The Lobos were 4-11 last year in conference play and finished the season in sixth place. New Mexico also looks to improve over last year's overall record, when they finished the season with a 13-35 record. The Lobos have already won 10 games this season and still have 18 games remaining.
The Lobos will return home next week for an eight-game homestand, April 15-27. New Mexico opens the homestand with Utah on April 15 and BYU on April 16-17. They will then play New Mexico State for a rematch on April 20 and will play Colorado State on April 24-25. The Lobos will finish up the homestand with a doubleheader against UTEP on April 27.
RECAPPING THE LAST GAME FOR NEW MEXICOThe University of New Mexico softball team lost Tuesday evening against Rio Grande Rival New Mexico State, 10-0 in five innings. Cristin Anderson, Danielle Castro, and Jessica Lujan-Dresslar each went 1-for-2 during the game for the Lobos. Freshman Kari Gutierrez received the loss in four innings and is now 2-6 on the season.
SCOUTING SAN DIEGO STATEFriday's game against San Diego State will be the 81st meeting between the two teams, with the Aztecs leading the series 51-29. San Diego State went 2-3 last season against New Mexico. The Aztecs won on April 11, 2009, 6-0 and on April 24, 2009, 10-4. The Lobos won on April 12, 2009, 3-1.
San Diego State comes into this weekend with a 22-10 record after splitting games last weekend against San Diego. San Diego State lost the first game 3-2, but came back the next day and shut out San Diego, 4-0. Jessica Camello leads the Aztecs at the plate with a .404 batting average with nine RBIs. Justeen Maeva is hitting .361 with six doubles, two triples, three home runs, and 25 RBIs.
San Diego State brings in a tough pitching staff this season, recording 10 shutouts. Samantha Beasley has been honored with the Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week six times this season. She has a 17-6 record with a 0.79 ERA and 217 strikeouts. Bailey Micetich could also see time in the circle for the Aztecs. Micetich has a 2-4 record with a 2.67 ERA and 54 strikeouts. Rounding out the pitching staff for San Diego State are Kamerin May and Brooke Petty, who have posted a 2-0 and 1-0 record, respectively.
SCOUTING UNLVSaturday's game against UNLV will be the 59th meeting between the two teams, with the Rebels leading the series 34-24. UNLV has won the past nine games, with the last win (8-4) coming on April 26, 2009.
UNLV comes into this weekend with a 23-14 record after going 3-0 at the BYU Round Robin this past weekend. The Rebels beat Idaho State twice, 9-8 in eight innings the first day and 19-4 in five innings the second day. They finished the weekend with a 6-4 win over Cal State Bakersfield. Marissa Nichols is hitting .426 with 28 RBIs and leads the team with nine home runs and 16 doubles. Jaci Hull is hitting .352 with 28 RBIs, nine doubles, three triples, and six home runs.
Jessica O'Connor leads the Rebels in the circle with a 9-4 record with a 2.90 ERA, 62 strikeouts and three shutouts. Kylie Wagner could also see time in the circle for UNLV with an 8-4 record and a 5.27 ERA. Rounding out the Rebels pitching staff are Traci Odegard and Stephan Bregante.
