ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- The University of New Mexico's women's basketball team was predicted to finish sixth in Mountain West Conference preseason poll, which was announced earlier today. The conference also announced the preseason all-conference team and individual honorees.
TCU was picked to win the Mountain West Conference title, followed by San Diego State and BYU to round off the top three. The Lobos, who were picked sixth, are ready to start their season, coming back with three returning starters and 10 returning letter winners overall. New Mexico is looking for its 14th consecutive postseason appearance in 2010-11.
Returning starters include Sara Halasz, Amanda Best and Jessica Kielpinski. Halasz, a junior, is an impact player for the team and the top-returning scorer in 2009-2010. Best, a senior, finished the 2009-2010 season third in both scoring and rebounding. Last season Kielpinski led the team in rebounding.
At a press conference on Tuesday, October 12, Coach Don Flanagan feels prepared and pleased with his 2010-2011 team.
"Returning players came back in good shape," Flanagan said. "I'm pretty happy with it, progress has been good. Right now we are doing really great with our depth as a team."
The Lobos open their season on November 9, 2010 in an exhibition against Western New Mexico. This will be the women's first appearance in the newly renovated Pit. The regular season starts on Friday, Nov 12 when the Lobos square off against Texas Tech at 7 p.m. For more information on the team, visit golobos.com.
