ALBUQUERQUE, N.M --- Now, the competition begins.

The University of New Mexico football team conducted another practice in pads Saturday, and for the first time this spring, one side of the football dominated.

The offense completed several deep balls and showed signs of explosive capability that is to be expected from a unit returning eight starters from 2011 - not counting running back Kasey Carrier, who was a starter in 2010 but redshirted last year.

Coach Bob Davie chalked up the advantage to the intricacies of coordinator Bob DeBesse's offense starting to show up during practice. Davie hired DeBesse from Football Championship Subdivision runner-up Sam Houston State in December.

"We're installing (schemes)," Davie said. "Anybody that's watched our offense knows - I know a lot of New Mexico fans got to see Sam Houston State first-hand last season - it's multiple. What we have to do is get that installed.

"Because of that, the defense is really at a disadvantage schematically because as our offense puts stuff in, the defense has a hard time keeping up with that. I think our offense - if anybody's keeping score, which we're not - today is ahead of the defense."

UNM's defense has been the victim of multiple big plays the last few years, and Davie said the team just needs to continue to practice with a sense of urgency.

"It continues to be a problem," Davie said of the defense against deep passes. "The defense is trying to get stuff installed, but some of it doesn't match up schematically against our offense. We've stressed to the defense that we can't get beat deep, that we can't give up the big play."

The Lobos will practice again Sunday, starting at 4 p.m. The first half hour of the practice is open to the public.

ROSTER ADDITION: Linebackers coach Jason Lenzmeier became a father Thursday night when his wife, Kelsey, gave birth to their son, Brooks. The child is the couple's first.

"Congratulations to them," said Davie, who noted Kelsey was kind enough to wait until the team had an off-day from practice to have the baby.

ROSTER SUBTRACTION: Davie announced Saturday that redshirt freshman offensive lineman Zach Boerboom has quit the team.

YOUTH IS SERVED: The 2012 Lobo Football Youth Experience will take place April 14 at University Stadium from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. The clinic, for kids in kindergarten through eighth grade will include watching the team practice, on-field drills with student athletes and coaches, a tour of the football facilities and a session in which Coach Davie will address the kids.

The Youth Experience will go from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., at University Stadium. Please check in at the southwest corner of the stadium.

The session is free, but UNM is asking parents to RSVP their children's attendance to lobofb@unm.edu or call the Lobo Football Office at 505-925-5700.

All of the practice on April 14 (10 a.m.-12:20 p.m.) is open to the public.
