COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The University of New Mexico's nationally ranked cross country teams claimed a pair of conference honors Tuesday as Josephine Moultrie and Sean Stam earned recognition from the Mountain West for their performances in races contested from Oct. 8-14, 2012.

Moultrie earned her second Mountain West Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week honor in the past three weeks, while Stam was selected for MW Men's Cross Country Co-Athlete of the Week, the first in his career.

A senior from Glasgow, Scotland, Moultrie blazed to a 19-minute, 56-second time in the women's 6-kilometer run at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational, placing ninth individually and leading the No. 17 Lobos to a team finish of 11th. Moultrie's time was also the fastest in the conference in 2012 and is just the fifth sub-20 minute 6K in MW history.

"Josephine, compared to last year, is a completely different runner," New Mexico head coach Joe Franklin said. "Over the summer, she made some lifestyle changes and commitments to the sport and she's seeing that now. She was consistent over the summer training. Her lifestyle was conducive to that of a distance runner and now she's seeing the benefits."

Stam, a junior from Rio Rancho, N.M., ran a 23:59 in the 8K Wisconsin adidas Invitational in Madison last week, pacing the No. 12 Lobos to an eighth-place team finish. Stam's time is the fastest 8K time in the Mountain West in 2012 and was the first 8K in the MW under 24 minutes since BYU's Miles Batty ran a 23:42.4 at the 2010 Pre-Nationals Invite.

Sean Stam picked up the Men's Co-Honors.

"I think Sean has really made a breakout performance, and this from a walk-on from Rio Rancho," Franklin said. "And it just shows what consistent training, belief in the systems and doing all the right things always keeps getting better and better."

Boise State senior Barak Watson shared the honor with Stam.

This is the second straight meet the Lobos competed at where they were able to receive Athlete of the Week recognitions. Moultrie picked up an Athlete of the Week nod and Luke Caldwell was able to share the men's honor after their performance two weeks ago at the Notre Dame Invitational.
