FULLERTON, Calif. --- New Mexico softball dropped a 4-2 battle against No. 1 Arizona State Saturday in the final game of the 2008 Judi Garman Classic. Freshman Gabriella Parra highlighted the game for New Mexico after going 2-for-3 with an RBI. The Lobos plated two runs on five hits but fell to 14-10 overall on the year. ASU recorded nine hits and scored four runs while improving to 34-2 on the season.
ASU scored first in the top of the third inning. The Sun Devils scored two runs on three hits.
New Mexico rallied back to tie the game in the fourth. Sophomore Sara Loeffelholz reached on an error and later scored on a Lindsey Elcess single. Freshman Gabriella Parra had a run-scoring single in the inning to score pinch runner Marsha Taylor.
The game remained tied at 2-2 until the fifth inning. Arizona State broke the tie with two runs on four hits and went on to win the game, 4-2.
Senior Kelly Ninemire went the distance for New Mexico and took the loss. Ninemire, who has handled the bulk of the pitching duties for the last two weeks, threw 7 innings allowing four runs on nine hits.
Megan Elliott got the win for ASU after throwing 4.2 innings. Katie Burkhart closed out the game and received the save. Burkhart threw the final 2.1 innings.
UNM plays UTSA in San Antonio, Texas Thursday starting at 5 p.m.
