IRVINE, Calif. - Senior Johnny Parkes entered the qualifying round at the USTA Futures in California on Sunday, defeating Tin Dong, 6-2, 6-1. With a win tomorrow, Parkes can enter the event's main draw.

The event is designed to give current college tennis players a taste of competing at the professional level, by playing against former college players and current pros.

Parkes defeated Jonathan Kinsella, 6-3, 6-1, on Saturday to advance to today's 32 draw.

Fellow seniors Miles Bugby and Graeme Kassautzki were eliminated from the 64 draw on Saturday.

In Tucson, Ariz., after advancing to the quarterfinals on Friday, the Lobos were stopped on Saturday. Newcomer Carl Ho advanced to the semifinals after a 6-3, 6-3 win, but fell to Arizona's Jason Zafiros, 6-4, 6-3. Zafiros had defeated senior Chandler Brass in the quarterfinals, 7-6, 2-6, 6-1. Sophomore Joe Wood kept it close, but couldn't pull through, losing 6-4, 6-7, 6-3.

Along with Wood, Ho and Brass, newcomers Andre Archer, Phil Anderson and Matt Neeld took advantage of the fall practice time provided by consolation rounds.

Up next for the Lobos will be the ITA All-American in Tulsa, Okla., starting on Friday, Oct. 3. On Oct. 10-12, the Lobos will host the UNM Balloon Fiesta Invite in Albuquerque.
