ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- New Mexico freshman Alexis Ball has been named to the Soccerbuzz.com National Elite Team of the Week today. Ball receives the national honor after scoring two game-winners last week and has recorded four goals in the last four matches. Ball is the first Lobo this season to be honored by Soccerbuzz.com and marks only the second time in school history a player has been named to an elite team.
Ball has started every match since joining the UNM women's soccer team in August. The speedy forward has a nose for the goal and leads the Lobos with four goals. The Albuquerque, N.M., native was named the Mountain West Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week on Monday and was selected as the New Mexico Qwest Player of the Week on www.GoLobos.com.
Ball's performances last week against Arizona State and Northern Arizona ranks among the elite in the nation and has UNM off to a 6-2-2 overall start. Ball had the only two goals for the Lobos last week in two 1-0 victories. UNM is off to its best start since the 1997 season and is currently receiving regional votes according to Soccerbuzz.com.
Ball, who played at La Cueva High School, joins current Lobo goalkeeper Shannon Adragna as the only two players to ever be named to a Soccerbuzz.com Elite Team of the Week.
UNM is idle this week and opens MWC action Oct. 12 against Wyoming inside the UNM Soccer Complex. For more information about Lobo women's soccer visit www.GoLobos.com.
