FORT WORTH, Texas - The University of New Mexico women's soccer team lost to the TCU Horned Frogs earlier this afternoon by a final score of 3-1. True freshman Nicole Reed led the Lobos offensively when she was able to convert on a penalty kick in the first half. The Lobos fall to 5-3-4 and 0-1-0 in Mountain West Conference play on the season. The Horned Frogs improve to 9-1-1 and 1-0-0 in MWC play on the season.
"It was a back and forth game we exchanged chances," said head coach Kit Vela. "The girls played well and hung in there with them but it wasn't our day. We got in to some one-on-one chances and didn't convert. We need to clean up some stuff on defense and put away some balls on offense. It was disappointing when we are doing everything right and don't convert. I told the girls after the match that once you get to conference and you don't put the ball in the back of the net it will come back to haunt you."
The Lobos were down 1-0 in the first half. That is when Reed was taken down in the box and awarded a penalty kick. The freshman converted on her second penalty kick of the season and put away her third goal of the season in the 34th minute making the score 1-1 going in to half time.
TCU came in to today's match averaging 25 shots per match but the Lobo defense held a trigger-happy Horned Frog offensive to only 13 which is just over it's average shots per game. This was only the second time all season that TCU has been out shot. The Texas Longhorns out shot the Horned Frogs 21-15 on Sept. 19. Senior goalkeeper Shannon Adragna picked up six saves while facing nine shots on goal.
The Lobos offense out shot the Horned Frogs by a count of 18-13. Taking the shots for the Lobos were sophomore Alexis Ball with four and freshmen Jennifer Williams with three shots and one on goal and Zaneta Wyne also with three shots and one on goal.
The Horned Frogs added two goals in the second half to make the final 3-1. Jordan Calhoun picked up her second goal of the match in the 51st minute after a quick transition off a Lobo corner kick. Cheryl Martin put in TCU's final goal at the 58th minute mark off a corner kick.
The Lobos will return to action on Oct. 10 when they travel to Colorado Springs, Colo. to take on the Air Force Falcons at 6 p.m. MDT. From Colorado Springs, the Lobos will head north to Laramie, Wyo. on Oct. 12 to face the Wyoming Cowgirls at 12 p.m. MDT. For more information visit www.GoLobos.com.
