TULSA, Okla. - New Mexico senior Miles Bugby won two consecutive pre-qualifying singles matches at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Championships today. Bugby advances to round four of pre-qualifying and will enter the qualifying portion of the tournament with a win on Sunday.
After a first round bye, Bugby defeated Iowa's Reinoud Haal 6-4, 6-2, in round two. Bugby followed up with a win over conference rival Adrian Simon of TCU, 4-6, 7-6 , 6-2.
"Miles played well toward the end of last year especially, and he is playing close to that level now," head coach Alan Dils said. "We thought he would have what it takes to advance to the qualifying round, so it comes as no surprise. He is playing hard and has done good."
Bugby will face-off on Sunday with SMU's Artem Borodach at 10:30 a.m. (MDT).
Players competing in pre-qualifying singles must advance four rounds to make one of 16 slots that move on to the subsequent qualifying draw of 128. The final 16 of the singles qualifying draw advance to play in the concluding 64-man draw starting on Thursday, Oct. 9.
Lobo newcomer Phil Anderson, who advanced to the second round after a three-set victory on Friday, was defeated by Sacramento State's Kiryl Harbatsuik, 7-6 , 6-1.
Qualifying action for doubles begins on Tuesday, Oct. 7. Representing New Mexico will be the duo of Johnny Parkes and Miles Bugby as well as Joe Wood and Graeme Kassautzki. Teams must advance three rounds in doubles qualifying to enter the main draw.
