ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- It took a strong comeback, but the University of New Mexico volleyball team defended its home turf with a 3-2 win over Portland State on Saturday, 25-22, 22-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-12, in the second round of the MCM Elegante Lobo Classic. Senior Anna Lehne had a career-high 17 kills with eight blocks for the Lobos. UNM setter Jade Michaelsen had 46 assists to move onto the Lobo Top 10 career assists list with 1,999.
UNM was down 2-1 after the third set. The fourth set was a battle with the Lobos taking the largest lead at the 19-16 mark on a Viking attack error. After tying at 20 and 21, UNM capitalized on another PSU attack error and a kill by Ashley Rhoades to take a 23-21 lead. PSU (0-2) cut the lead to 24-23, before an attack error gave the Lobos the win, 25-23.
The fifth set was another battle with the teams battling to an 11-11 tie. Lehne had three of her 17 kills in the final five points of the match, including the match-winner, to keep New Mexico undefeated on the season, 2-0.
Earlier in the day, UC Santa Barbara (2-0) beat Delaware (0-2), 25-12, 25-16, 25-12.
The evening session begins at 5 p.m. with Portland State and Delaware playing for third place, followed by the championship match at 7:30 p.m. between New Mexico and UC Santa Barbara.
