SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The New Mexico softball team put up a good fight against 16th-ranked Oregon State but the Beavers held on for a 7-3 win in the fourth game of the Commercial Capital Early Bird Tournament hosted by UC Santa Barbara today.
The Beavers' Mia Longfellow led off the game with a single and stole second before Lisa Allen reached on an error giving Longfellow time to score. Two innings later, Adrienne Alo led off with a single to right and scored off a Cambria Miranda double to right. Sherina Galvan pushed OSU's lead to three as she scored on a passed ball.
The Lobos struck back, getting two runs on the board in the bottom of the third. Freshman Christina Rios started the inning with a single to left and scored on classmate Ashley Allen's single to left. Sophomore Becky Dover followed with another single to left that brought home junior Cassie Chavez.
Oregon State poured on the runs in the sixth, taking a 6-2 lead behind RBI singles from Longfellow and Kelly Peterson and a double from Alo.
Trying to rally, Rios started the sixth with a double to center and Chavez followed with a single to left. But only Rios would score in the inning which would turn out to be the Lobos' final run of the game.
Rios and Chavez were both 2-3 overall with two and one runs scored, respectively. Allen and Dover were both 1-3 with a RBI. Sophomore Caley Peterson suffered her first loss as Lobo going four innings for six hits, four walks and three strikeouts. Junior Katie Gregg and senior Ashley Perkins each pitched in relief allowing a combined seven hits with two strikeouts.
Longfellow and Alo led the Beavers going 2-3. Longfellow also score two runs and drew a walk while Alo had one run score, RBI and walk. Amy Klever got the win, throwing 3.1 innings for six hits, two earned runs and four strikeouts.
