PALO ALTO, Calif. --- The University of New Mexico baseball team lost to Stanford, 17-5, on Saturday afternoon at Sunken Diamond in Palo Alto. Catcher Rafael Neda and centerfielder Max Willett were 2-for-3 at the plate for the Lobos with Neda adding one run and two RBI and Willett crossing home plate twice. New Mexico is now 33-17 overall, while Stanford improves to 24-21 on the season. The teams will decide the winner of the weekend series on Sunday, May 10 at 2 p.m. (MDT).

Freshman starter Rudy Jaramillo (3-1) was roughed up for nine Stanford runs over the first three-plus innings. The Cardinal scored two in the first and five in the third for a 7-0 lead, before UNM found their offense.

New Mexico was able to cut the Stanford lead to three in the top of the fourth. Neda hit a two-out, two-run home run to left field that plated Willett and was followed two batters later by right fielder Brian Cavazos-Galvez with another two-run shot over the left field wall to score third baseman Kevin Atkinson, 7-4.

Jaramillo went out to start the fourth inning, but was relieved after the second batter when Stanford's Toby Gerhart put a two-run home run out of the park, 9-4. Junior Jason Oatman took over on the mound for the Lobos, but could not get the Cardinal bats to stop, allowing five more runs, 14-4, before giving way to junior Edwin Carl. Carl was able to get Gerhart to ground out to shortstop Daniel Gonzalez to stop the fourth inning.

Carl was able to put up two scoreless innings in the fifth and sixth, but gave up two runs in the seventh to give Stanford a 16-4 lead.

Stanford starter Brett Mooneyham (5-2) threw 7.1 innings to win the battle of the freshmen lefties, settling down after the four-run fourth and holding off the Lobos until the eighth. Willett led off the eighth with a single to left field and pinch hitter Ben Woodchick flied out to right before Mooneyham left the game. Willett went on to score on a ground out by reserve right fielder Chris Juarez when reliever Danny Sandbrink loaded the bases, 16-5.

Stanford added one more run in the eighth off of senior Bobby Moore, making just his second relief appearance of the season for the final, 17-5.

Along with Neda and Willett, Atkinson also had two of the Lobos eight hits in the game.
