San Diego, Calif. --- Brianna Webster learned yesterday about being named to the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District VII team. She apparently is pretty good at using her head on the pitch as well. Webster's perfectly timed header of a Rachel Montoya corner kick was all New Mexico needed as the Lobos defeated the No. 6 Nevada Wolf Pack 1-0 in the semifinals of the Mountain West Tournament, advancing to the championship game for the third straight year.

The Lobos defeated Wyoming in the title game last year 2-0, and lost to BYU 1-0 in 2010.

The Lobos advance to play San Diego State in Sunday's title game. The Aztecs beat UNLV 3-0. Sunday's winner gets an automatic bid to NCAA postseason play.

After a scoreless first half, the Lobos earned a corner kick, and that tends to be an invitation for disaster for most teams. It was for Nevada. Rachel Montoya sent a ball to the middle of the box, and Webster climbed the ladder over everyone to beat Dana Moreno at the 56:37 mark.

That goal was all UNM needed as they controlled the run of play for most of the match, limiting Nevada to just one shot on net, and that was early in the second half. Nevada pushed, and had seven shots and three corners in the second half, but the Wolf Pack, who ended their season at 7-10-3, never really threatened.

Kelli Cornell registered just one save on the day as the Lobos improved to 11-6-2 on the season.

Webster had scored just once all season, but that goal was the opening goal of a 4-1 win over SMU, a win that kick-started UNM's closing run of what is now an 11-3-1 mark in the last 15 matches.

Montoya has had a good run of late, and that assist was her fifth of the year, good for the team lead.

"I was really proud of the girls' effort," said head coach Kit Vela. "We showed character, heart, determination and togetherness. I thought the team dealt with anything thrown at them, and we had a great connection for a goal from Rachel to Brianna."
