COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - University of New Mexico junior Nicky Archer has been selected as the Mountain West Conference Women's Cross Country Athletes of the Week, the conference office announced this afternoon. It's Archer's second Athlete of the Week award this fall, giving the women's team three and the UNM men and women four combined weekly awards in 2008 - all of which are program records.
Archer finished 26th out of 278 runners in the women's blue race at the 2008 NCAA Pre-Nationals Invitational, leading the Lobos to a 10th place showing against a field that included No. 1 Washington, No. 4 Minnesota, No. 6 Stanford and No. 9 Michigan State.
The Cheshire, England, product covered the 6K course in an MWC-best time of 20:54.6 to help New Mexico move up to second in the latest Mountain Region rankings and 23rd nationally, according to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Archer was the front-runner for the Lobos for the third time this fall.
Archer joins Jacquelyne Gallegos (2005) as the only UNM women to earn MWC Athlete of the Week honors twice in the same season. Archer, senior Michelle Corrigan and junior Jacob Kirwa on the men's side have earned the program record four combined MWC awards this fall for the Lobos.
