MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. --- Matt Hibbitts, Ian Hollick, and Scott Gracey had two hits each for the University of New Mexico baseball team, but the No. 18 California Bears won, 12-2, on the final day of the 2008 Metrodome Tournament in Minneapolis.
But Cal (9-1-1) built up a 9-1 lead going into the sixth inning, before the Lobos could get on the scoreboard again.
In the top of the sixth, Gracey hit a two-out single to score Hollick, making the score 9-2.
Lobo starter Stephen Smith (0-1) lasted four and a third innings, allowing nine hits, six runs, two walks and striking out five against the second nationally-ranked Pac-10 team the Lobos faced in a week.
Cal's Alex Rollin (1-0) picked up his first win of the season in five and two-thirds innings of work, while Stephen Pistoresi shut down the Lobos for three innings to pick up his first save of the season.
New Mexico returns to action on Tuesday, March 11, with a single game against Texas Tech. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Isotopes Park. The Lobos begin Mountain West Conference action later this week against UNLV at home.
