AUSTIN, Texas - Senior Jason Barkemeyer only needed one throw on Friday afternoon to secure his second spot in the field of the NCAA Midwest Regional Championship meet later this spring. Barkemeyer shattered his personal best on his first attempt in the discus, recording a regional qualifying mark of 173-02 to finish fourth in section B competition at the Texas Relays. Already a qualifier in the shot put, the Belen, N.M. native will compete in both events at the regional meet for the second straight year.

Barkemeyer eclipsed his previous best by nearly four feet despite keeping just two of his six attempts in-bounds. Last year, he finished 11th in the shot put and 32nd in the discus at the Midwest Regional Championships.

Earlier in the day, junior Veronica R. Gonzales finished ninth overall in section B javelin competition with a throw of 139-00. Senior Chris Garofola competed in his second race of the meet, placing third in his heat and 32nd overall in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.83. Senior Jimmy Minner capped the evening by finishing fifth in his flight with a 184-06 throw in the section B javelin competition.

The Lobos wrap up their stay in Austin on Saturday when senior Branden Bennett and the women's distance medley relay team take center stage at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Bennett will compete in meet's final field event, the section A pole vault, while the distance medley team take the track at 12:05 p.m. (MST).
