ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Senior Ashley Perkins and junior Katie Gregg were locked in with sophomore catcher Liz Young, each getting a 2-0 shutout over New Mexico State in a doubleheader at Lobo Field this afternoon. The 14 scoreless innings brings the New Mexico pitching staff's streak to 16 consecutive scoreless innings and 28 of the last 29 innings overall.
In game one, Gregg held the Aggies to just three hits. Stacy Knight had two of the three NMSU hits, including the team's first hit of the day in the fourth inning. Gregg walked just one batter and struck out four.
New Mexico scored one run in the first inning behind junior Kristina Schmallen's RBI double to right field that gave the extremely fast sophomore Ryanne Hodgins time to score from first base. Sophomore Becky Dover added an insurance run in the sixth with one out as she belted a home run over the left field fence.
Perkins allowed just two hits in game two, striking out nine and walking four. Perkins recorded seven of the strikeouts against 11 of the last 26 batters she faced.
Senior Ashley Shartzer drove in both of the Lobos runs in the fourth inning, homering to center field while the wind was blowing straight in. Schmallen scored on the home run after leading off the inning with a walk.
New Mexico, currently on a five game win streak which is the longest of the season, improves to 10-15 overall while the Aggies fall to 15-19. New Mexico is now 3-1 against New Mexico State this year, taking all three games at home.
