Box Score |  Aug. 18 Lobos vs. Alumni

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- The atmosphere was relaxed as the University of New Mexico volleyball team beat the Lobo Alumni in an exhibition match, 30-12, 30-24, 30-14. The match was a good warm-up for the present Lobos, who begin the 2007 season on Friday, Aug. 24, at 7:30 p.m. against Florida Atlantic in the MCM Elegante Lobo Classic.

Junior outside hitter Jeanne Fairchild led the way for the Lobos with 19 kills, 10 in Game One. Freshman Lisa Meeter started the match and recorded nine kills and eight digs, while sophomore Anna Lehne put down seven kills and three blocks. Redshirt freshman Jade Michaelsen recorded 37 assists as the setter for the Lobos.

"I think our team came out really well and got after it tonight," said first-year head coach Jeff Nelson. "I was excited about that. They had a lot of energy. We played low-error ball in Game One and that allowed us to get on top. I was afraid that they would be nervous but they went out there and had some fun."

Each of the present-day Lobos, who were dressed out for the evening, had the chance to play. At one point all five freshmen were on the court. Juniors Sarah Kwasigroch and Kerri Beck sat out the match, but are expected back for the season opener on Friday.

Ten alumni took the court, including former Lobo All-American Karen Saavedra-Warnock (1985-88). Saavedra-Warnock, now a high school coach in Colorado Springs, dished out 14 assists for the Lobo Alumni. Jessica VanLannen (1998-2000) led the Alumni team with eight kills. Casey Kaveny (2001-03) contributed with four blocks, while Adah Burke (2002-04) had 10 digs.

"I am so excited for this team this year," said Saavedra-Warnock. "I just know they are going to catch on fire and get going. I'm very excited about the new coaching staff and I think the girls have adjusted well to it. I really think this program is going to thrive."

UNM begins the regular season by hosting the MCM Elegante Lobo Classic on Aug. 24-25 at the Johnson Center on the Main Campus of UNM. The four-team tournament gets underway at 5 p.m. on Friday with Grambling State versus San Jose State, followed at 7:30 p.m. with UNM versus Florida Atlantic. Play resumes at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

Season tickets are still available through the UNM Ticket Office. For more information, call (505) 925-LOBO or (800) 955-HOWL.
