Another Year, Another Record For Lobos Advancing to NCAAs

The University of New Mexico is sending a record number 24 individual qualifiers and one relay team (total of 26 Lobos) to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship Preliminaries in Austin, Texas. New Mexico's previous qualifying record for NCAA competition was 19 in 2009.

The Lobos have eight athletes in the top 10 in their respective events in the west region including senior Lee Emanuel (No. 2) in the 1500m and junior Deanna Young (No. 3) in the triple jump. Events begin on Thursday (May 27) at the Mike A. Myers Stadium and run through May 29.

Each event includes the top 48 in the west region. All athletes have to compete in this weekend's preliminary competition to advance to the NCAA Championship. The only exception is competitors in the heptathlon and decathlon.

Lobos In The Rankings

U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association released the rankings Tuesday with the Lobo women moving up six spots from No. 23 to No. 17. The men stayed at No. 22.

The only other MWC school to appear in the rankings in the men of BYU at No. 11 and the BYU women at No. 16.

The rankings this week used only data from those who declared and were accepted into the NCAA Preliminaries.

Lee Emanuel - 1500m - Senior - Hastings, England
• Ranked No. 2 in the Nation with a time of 3:38.79
• Took 1st in the event at the MWC Championships with a time of 3:44.99
• One of three Lobos to make the field
• 2009 and 2010 Indoor mile Champion
• 2009 Outdoor All-American
• 2010/2008 All-MWC in the 1500m
• Qualified for the 800m but chose to scratch

Sandy Fortner - Long Jump - Senior - Fort Sumner, N.M.
• Automatically qualified for the Heptathlon with a career best score of 5,723
• Career best in the long jump 20-4.50 recorded at the 2010 Texas Relays
• Qualified for the 2008 NCAA's, knee problems kept her from competing in the event
• Currently No. 34 in the nation and No. 23 in the west region in the event
• 2010 All-MWC in the heptathlon

Chris Barnicle - 10,000m - Senior - Newtown, Mass.
• Ranked No. 2 in the country and No. 1 in the west region with a time of 28:10.59
• Set a PR (28:10.09) in the event at the Jordan Payton Cardinal Invitation, finished 2nd among collegiate racers
• One of three Lobos in the event

Deanna Young - Triple Jump - Junior - Albuquerque, N.M.
• Ranked No. 4 in the nation and No. 3 in the west region with a mark of 43-10.75 (13.38)
• Set a career best in the event (43-10.75) at the 2010 Texas Relays
• 2009 Indoor All-American in the event
• 2010 All-MWC in Triple Jump

Ruth Senior - 3000SC and 5,000m - Junior - Norwich, England
• No. 10 nationally and No. 6 in the west region in the 3000SC
• No. 8 nationally and No. 4 in the west region in the 5K
• All-MWC in the 3000SC
• Owns the school record in both the 3000SC (10:09.14) and the 5K (15:57.32)
• Took 2nd at MWC Championships in the 3000SC

David Bishop - 1500m - Senior - Cippenham, England
• Ranked No. 18 in the nation and No. 9 in the west region (3:42.01)
• Took 3rd at MWC Championships
• All-MWC in 1500m
• 3x Indoor All-MWC in the mile

Nicky Archer - 5,000m and 10,000m - Senior - Cheshire, England
• No. 10 in the nation in the 10K and No. 6 in the west region
• Took 6th at the MWC Championships in the 10K
• School Record holder in the 10K with a time of 33:32.83
• 2009 Outdoor All-MWC in the 5K and 10K

Jacob Kirwa - 5,000m - Senior - Eldoret, Kenya
• No. 24 nationally and No. 12 in the nation in the 5K
