The shot charts from the New Mexico Lobos Friday night encounter with Cal State Fullerton tell a lie: Lobos 17 shots, Fullerton 11; Lobos 12 shots on goal, Fullerton 5.

It was a game the Lobos dominated on the grass, but not on the scoreboard which reflected a harsh truth: Cal State Fullerton 3, New Mexico 2, in overtime.

Fullerton's Rebecca Wilson one-touched a rebound in front of the New Mexico net and sliced a shot high into the corner at the 95:49 mark of the contest - 5:49 into the extra period. It was an unstoppable shot for UNM keeper Kelli Cornell, who had no chance on the curving missile that ripped to her left and into the upper corner of the webbing.

"You can't have 12 shots on goal and not put in more than goals into the back of the net," said Lobo Coach Kit Vela. "It's unfortunate. They're (Fullerton) good and we know they're good, but I thought we had the better flow of the game.

"It was an unfortunate goal at the end. That's the nature of the beast."

The loss in front of a UNM crowd of 2,011 dropped the Lobos to 3-4-2 on the season. The Lobos will play UC Riverside Sunday at 1 p.m., preceded by Fullerton battling North Texas at 11 a.m.

The Lobos outshot Fullerton 16 to 9 in regulation with an 11 to 3 edge in shots on goal. In overtime, Fullerton launched one more time - 2 to 1 - and that rocket by Wilson ended the contest. Fullerton ended up with 10 saves while Cornell had two saves for UNM.

The Riverside Highlanders also were outshot on the evening, 12-6, but got a game-winner in overtime to produce a 2-1 win over North Texas. Riverside, like Fullerton, had to stage a come-from-behind win after falling into a 1-0 hole to the Mean Green.

Fullerton also had to fight back as UNM's Jennifer Williams received a long pass from Natalie Jenks. Williams used her blinding speed to charge at the Fullerton keeper, who tried to come out and take away the angle. Williams casually ripped a left-footed shot past the keeper and deep into the Fullerton net.

The Titans came back to produce a 1-1 tie at the half. Fullerton's goal came on a cross in front of the UNM net. Cornell made a diving save with her left hand, but Fullerton swarmed the bouncing ball and Nikki McCants muscled in the goal.

The Lobos charged ahead at the 72:07 mark of the second half when Jael Fanning placed a cross beautifully in front of the Titan net. UNM's Rachel Montoya beat her defender and accepted the pass on the run and flicked the ball into the Titans' net. "I knew I had to get to it," said Montoya.

The Titans didn't waste any time striking back as they scored at the 73:18 mark. Fullerton's Kishi Smith went unmarked in front of the UNM net and was unpressured as she drilled a hard and low shot past Cornell's right side.

"I think we thought (the ball) went out of bounds down there and we stopped," said Vela. "All of a sudden she turned the corner and served it (in front of the UNM net). It teaches you not to stop until (officials) call something.

"Things aren't bouncing our way. We have to find ways to make things bounce our way. I can't fault our effort. We gave everything and then some. We just couldn't find the back of the net."

Said Montoya: "We have to play all 90 minutes - and plus. It wasn't that we didn't play hard. Our effort was definitely there and we worked hard for each other. We forget about this game and move on to the next one. We'll work hard and come out hungry."
