ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- New Mexico softball split a doubleheader Wednesday with New Mexico State at Lobo Field. The Lobos won game one, 7-5, but fell in the second game, 3-1. UNM sophomore Analise Rubalcava highlighted the action after going 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBI in game one, including her fifth home run of the year. The Lobos move to 15-17 on the year, while NMSU goes to 25-25.
UNM scored three runs in the first two innings of game one and jumped out to a 6-0 lead. Rubalcava's blasted a two-run homer to right field in the first inning to score sophomore Samantha Hughes. Senior Amy Ray also scored in the first on an RBI double by junior Lindsey Elcess. In the second inning, UNM had three singles and a sacrifice fly by Elcess to score three runs.
The final Lobo run in game one came in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by Hughes to score freshman catcher Erin Brandow.
The Aggies rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh after the first three batters reached. NMSU had three singles in the inning and capitalized on two UNM fielding errors.
Junior Kelly Ninemire got the win and moved to 10-9 overall. Sammie Dillard took the loss for NMSU and fell to 16-14.
Offensively, Rubalcava led the way going 3-for-3, while Ray was 1-for-3 with a run. Elcess was 1-for-2 with two RBI and Hughes was 1-for-2 with two runs and two RBI.
The Aggies rebounded to win game two, 3-1. Dillard started the game in the circle for NMSU and went 2 2/3 innings allowing a run on two hits. Vanessa Fitzgerald came on in relief and pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings to get the win. Fitzgerald moved to 9-4 with the win as the NMSU pitching staff held the Lobos to three hits.
The Aggies plated two runs in the second inning on two hits and a fielding error.
UNM senior Ryanne Hodgins scored the only run in the third inning on a throwing error by the Aggies catcher.
The final run for NMSU came in the sixth on an RBI single by Stephanie Herrera.
