SAN DIEGO, Calif. - New Mexico's final game of the Mountain West Conference Preseason Tournament at Tony Gwynn Stadium in San Diego was postponed after eight innings against the Utah Utes due to team travel arrangements. The Utes, leading 11-4, visit Albuquerque for a three-game series beginning April 21. Today's game will be completed on the 21st prior to the regular season game.
Utah held a 3-0 lead after putting one run on the board in the first and two in the third. In the first, Jay Brossman single to load the bases with no outs, setting up the sacrifice fly from Clayne Garrett. In the third, Garrett singled through the right side for a RBI and Brossman scored in the next at bat as John Welsh singled up the middle.
Freshman Zach Arnett scored the first Lobo run of the game and his first run of the season on a single to right from sophomore Jordan Pacheco in the third. Junior Chris Carlson snapped an 0-for-14 performance at the tournament with a RBI single to left center, bringing home senior Ryan Barba, leading the Lobos down just a run (3-2).
The teams traded runs in the fourth before Utah broke the game wide open, putting five on the board in the fifth for a 9-3 lead. The Utes got five hits in six at bats off of freshman reliever Tim Sloan, capped by a two-RBI double from Ryan Khoury.
Arnett walked to load the bases in the sixth with no outs, trying to spark a Lobo rally. With one out, Pacheco hit a sacrifice fly to left, driving in sophomore Ian Hollick.
In the eighth, Utah added two more runs, stretching the lead to 11-4. With one out, Brossman doubled to left, allowing Khoury to get to third and then score on an error at second by Pacheco. With two outs, Brossman scored on a single to right by Welsh.
Through eight innings, Arnett was 2-for-3 with a run scored while senior Brandon Bingham was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Pacheco was 1-for-3 with a team-high two RBI. Brossman and Welsh were both 3-for-5 at the plate. Khoury finished 2-for-3 with a team-high four runs scored and tied for the team lead in RBI with two.
Freshman righty starter Chace Lanford threw 4 innings, allowing five hits, four runs (three earned), five walks and six strikeouts. Sloan went 0.1 innings for five hits and five runs while freshman Aaron Bates tossed 1.2 innings, giving up just one hit. Freshman Jordan Salazar also pitched, going 2 innings for four hit, two runs and a walk.
The Lobos return to Isotopes Park on Tuesday night, playing an exhibition game against the Albuquerque Isotopes at 6 p.m. They resume MWC action on Friday with a three-game series at San Diego State.
