COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --- The University of New Mexico volleyball team beat Air Force, 30-14, 30-15, 30-20 in Colorado Springs on Friday night. The Lobos improve to 15-7 overall and 6-4 in Mountain West Conference action. The 15 wins are the most in the season by UNM since joining the MWC in 1999. The six wins in MWC play ties the most league wins by the Lobos since joining (6, 2005).
"I am extremely proud of the team and the season to this point," said Lobo head coach Jeff Nelson. "The accomplishments this season have been tremendous and getting this win tonight is another step in moving the program forward."
The Lobos got on track quickly in Game One after starting in the hole, 3-1. Jade Michaelsen served UNM on an 11-0 run to take a 12-3 lead. Jeanne Fairchild recorded four kills in a row to get the Lobos going at the start of the run. New Mexico extended the lead to double digits for good at 21-11 on an attack error by the Falcons. The Lobos pushed to the 30-14 finish with Colorado Springs product Lisa Meeter closing the game with a kill.
In Game Two, Meeter served UNM to a 6-1 lead, and after 6-2 the Lobos never let Air Force get any closer. The Lobos went on a 6-0 run in the game to jump out to a 23-8 lead on back-to-back kills by Fairchild.
Game Three saw the Lobos lead 3-0 and never give up the lead. Back-to-back ball-handling errors by Air Force got the Lobo lead to 10-5. New Mexico held the Falcons at bay, getting to a double digit lead at 27-17 on a block by Meeter, Allie Suiter, and Taylor Hadfield. Hadfield put away the match on one of her five kills, 30-20.
"I thought it was a great all-around team effort," said Nelson. "We played very focused and steady. We were able to pull away and play good ball in each game."
Fairchild led the Lobos with 16 kills and a .609 hitting percentage, while Anna Lehne, also playing in front of her home crowd, recorded nine kills. Meeter finished the night with eight kills and 10 digs. Suiter, also a Colorado native, had six kills and five blocks.
"It was nice to see Lisa Meeter and Anna Lehne play so well in front of their hometown crowd," continued Nelson. "Jeanne Fairchild recovered well and got her game back on track tonight. Kelsi Phillips and Gayle Tripp did a great job in the back row."
The Lobos return to action on Friday, Oct. 26, at TCU. Match time in Fort Worth is set for 6 p.m. MDT.
