ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- The University of New Mexico women's basketball team held its annual Bank of the West Awards Banquet on April 8 at the Hyatt Regency Downtown. Over 400 fans came out to celebrate the 2009-10 season and honor the Lobos' four seniors - Amy Beggin, Georonika Jackson, Valerie Kast and Eileen Weissmann.
Lobo head coach Don Flanagan was one of several speakers who addressed the crowd and presented the team's yearly awards. Kast was honored for the fourth year in a row for her work in the community with the Lobo Community Award, while junior Amanda Best received the Most Improved Award for the second consecutive year. Sophomore Sara Halasz earned the Defensive Player of the Year Award for the first time and freshman Caroline Durbin earned the Student-Athlete of the Year Award for carrying the team's best grade point average.
Beggin earned the Reaching For The Stars Award for the third year in a row, adding another Most Valuable Player honor to her elite Lobo resume. Beggin finished her career as a three-time All-Mountain West Conference selection and as a finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. She finished her Lobo career ranked in the top 10 on several UNM career lists, including points (6th; 1,423), assists (3rd, 435), three-point field goals (2nd, 217) and steals (4th, 190).
UNM is coming off a 19-13 season and its 13th consecutive post-season appearance. The Lobos had three all-conference selections in Beggin (first team and all-defense), Best (honorable mention) and junior Jessica Kielpinski (honorable mention). New Mexico advanced to the 2010 WNIT Second Round.
