Perkins Hurls Two-Hit Shutout Over New Mexico State

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Senior Ashley Perkins was in all-star form, hurling a two-hit complete game shutout over New Mexico State. Perkins sat down eight batters, including the first three and four of the first six batters she faced. New Mexico went on to win the final day's game of the Fairfield Inn Lobo Softball Classic, 3-0, improving to 7-15 overall while the Aggies dropped to 13-17.

New Mexico collected the first hit of the game in the third inning as sophomore Becky Dover led off the inning with a double to the right center field wall. Two batters later, sophomore Liz Young belted her first Lobo career double to left field, driving in Dover for the RBI and 1-0 lead. Again, two batters later with two outs, sophomore Amy Ray dropped a single into a gap in right field, giving Young time to score, increasing the lead to 2-0.

Ray added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, launching her first home run of the season over the left field wall.

The Lobos had five hits at the plate, two of them coming from Ray, who finished the day 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored. Becky Dover and Liz Young hit .500, going 1-for-2.

New Mexico State's two hits came from Kasey Sandlin in the third and Princess Moore in the sixth. Stephanie Carrasco suffered the loss, throwing a five-hit complete game with three strikeouts and no walks.

Perkins earned her third win of the season. She gave up three walks.

New Mexico State is done with the tournament this weekend, finishing 1-3. Today they lost to Texas Tech, 2-3, after losing to the Red Raiders yesterday, 1-0 in eight innings. Their lone win came against Liberty yesterday, 7-5.

The only other game today resulted in a 6-5 win in eight innings for Texas Tech over Liberty. Texas Tech and New Mexico are both undefeated in the tournament and will meet tomorrow at 2 p.m.

The Lobos will take on Liberty tomorrow at noon in the second tournament game of the day at Lobo Field. Liberty is 0-3 so far this weekend.

Following the tournament, Fairfield Inn representatives will award the 10-team all-tournament team with trophies as well as the tournament MVP, tournament champion and tournament runner-up.
