Recap |  Box Score |  Notes |  Feb3, 2009 Lobo Basketball vs. Wyoming

New Mexico head coach Steve Alford

"Obviously this is a really good win for us. I'm very pleased with our team. They've been working hard and we've been seeing improvements defensively. To hold this team to 35% shooting, 57 points -their lowest of the season is huge.

Our defensive has really been solid and a lot of that has to do with taking good shots offensively. We only turned the ball over eight times, so the little things go hand and hand. It was just a really good performance by a lot of guys tonight. "

On performances of Chad Toppert, Nate Garth, and Jonathan Wills
"I thought Chad (Toppert) was a tremendous key for us. They went man to man early and we got up by five or six points. Then they went zone and it was kind of a game where we went stagnant a little bit because we haven't seen zone in a long time.

There aren't many guys in the country that are better than Chad at busting zones. He makes about three 3s in about a two-minute frame which got us up over 10 points and I thought that really made it hard on them. Chad was a big key.

I thought Jonathan (Wills) really did some good things for us. When you looked at his line at halftime he was doing a lot of good things for us. He's playing very well right now. Nate (Garth) had a much better second half. He settled down. There were just a lot of guys who played very good basketball."

Wyoming head coach Heath Schroyer

"I think Chad Toppert came out and lit us up in the first half. I think we were down four at one of the time-outs and we were playing pretty good. And then we lost Toppert a few times. It's tough to overcome."

Trying to get the team playing with confidence while on the road
"You take it one day at a time. And we played five of the top six teams on the road and no one else has done that. It's tough, we've had a tough draw, but you just take it one day at a time and try to get better. It's no easy solution. We have to be able to score the ball in the paint, which we didn't tonight. We didn't against BYU. And we have to be able to defend the three, especially against BYU and New Mexico because they are both very good."

Getting off to a quicker start on the road
"The frustrating part is we got the ball inside the paint nine times and we didn't capitalize. We threw the ball to the post six times in the first half and had turnovers. All three of our post guys had two turnovers each at halftime. That's the frustrating part. I think we got the ball where we wanted to in the first half, but we just struggled."
