Ruidoso, N.M. - The University of New Mexico football team conducted its first full contact scrimmage of the preseason tonight at Horton Field. Head coach Mike Locksley put the Lobos through more than 125 plays with a crowd of 500 fans on hand.

"This was a very competitive scrimmage," said Locksley. "When you have situational scrimmages, you don't always get the flow of a normal game. We were able to hit all the situations we had planned. When you have efficiency on both sides of the ball, you have a pretty good scrimmage. This was the first time the coaches were on the field but until you watch the film it will be tough to tell. We are getting closer to where we want to be."

Nearly half of the situational scrimmage featured offensive possessions that started in the red zone. And, the offense was quite successful, recording nine touchdowns and a field goal in drives that started inside the defense's 20-yard line.

Sophomore QB B.R. Holbrook (Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) accounted for four TDs on the night, three of those coming in the red zone. He connected with sophomore WR Ty Kirk (Arlington Heights, Ill.) from 19 yards when Kirk fought off safety A.J. Butler to bring down a deflection in the back of the end zone.

Holbrook also scored on a nifty 3-yard bootleg. He completed 8-of-14 passes for 166 yards with no interceptions and two TDs. Holbrook's first score culminated an 80-yard drive when he rolled to his right and found sophomore TE Lucas Reed (Tucson, Ariz.) on an 8-yard pass.

Senior TB Terence Brown (Phoenix, Ariz.) had a productive evening, rushing 15 times for 61 yards and two TDs, including a nice 17-yard run up the middle when he broke a pair of tackles in the secondary.

Junior TB James Wright (Dallas, Texas) ran for 56 yards on 15 carries and a score.

True freshman Brandon Lewis (Plano, Texas) led all rushers with 70 yards on 13 carries. The Lobos ran the ball 75 times, gaining 261 yards.

UNM's two true freshmen quarterbacks got their first action against a live defense. Tarean Austin (Tampa, Fla.) and Stump Godfrey (Gilmer, Texas) each displayed some solid moves in the open field that have Lobo coaches excited about their futures.

Austin ran for 36 yards and passed for 51 yards on 6-of-9 accuracy.

Senior WR Bryant Williams (Edina, Minn.) led all receivers with four catches for 53 yards. True freshman WR Martize Barr (Washington, D.C.) grabbed four for 22 yards while true freshman TE Brad Miller (Sealy, Texas) totaled 17 yards on three receptions, including a 3-yard TD.

Defensively, senior LB Terel Anyaibe (DeSoto, Texas) had six tackles. Sophomore LB Joe Stoner (Midwest City, Okla.) and senior LB Cody Neely (La Puente, Calif.) had five apiece.

Junior S Bubba Forrest (Carlsbad, N.M.) had the lone interception.

Junior K James Aho (Roswell, N.M.) connected on his only field goal attempt from 33 yards.

The Lobos continue preseason workouts next week at the White Mountain Athletic Complex in Ruidoso. UNM will hold eight more practice sessions, culminating in a final scrimmage next Saturday at Horton Field from 5-7:30 p.m. All practices are open to the public.

"The atmosphere here has been great and tonight there was a strong crowd," said Locksley. "The players have really enjoyed the fan support throughout the week. We were able to get under the light today in front of a nice environment."

New Mexico opens the season Sept. 4 at nationally-ranked Oregon.
