TUCSON, Ariz. - The New Mexico baseball team narrowly missed sweeping the series in Tucson, but Arizona topped the Lobos 19-16, Sunday afternoon at Kindall Field.

UNM jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings with sophomore Jordan Pacheco scoring on a ground out from junior Chris Carlson in the first and junior Matt Foote and sophomore Ian Hollick scoring on singles in the second.

Arizona chipped the Lobos' lead down to one with two runs in the bottom of the second as Brad Glenn walked home on a hit by pitch from senior Darren Coltrinari to Colt Sedbrook. Brad Boyer followed with an RBI single, scoring Jon Gaston.

Carlson got the two runs back in the top of the third with a two run home run to left field that brought in junior Jay Russell. But four hits and two errors in the bottom of the inning led to eight Arizona runs, giving the Wildcats a 10-5 lead.

New Mexico pulled within one (10-9) in the fourth as Carlson hit a sacrifice fly to right, bringing home junior Chris Dabbs. Junior Daniel Stovall followed with a three-run bomb to center, drving in Pacheco and Russell.

The bottom of the fifth started with two singles and a double, putting two more Arizona runs on the board. A single through the right side by Bill Rhinehart drove in the third and fourth runs of the inning. Boyer brought in Rhinehart for the fifth and final run of the inning, increasing Arizona's lead to 15-9.

Pacheco led off the sixth with a solo shot to left and freshman Zach Arnett had an RBI single to right center in the seventh to pull the Lobos within four at 15-11. But a double from Derek Decater and a single from Konrad Schmidt put three more runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh, giving the Wildcats their biggest lead at 18-11.

Hollick tripled to center in the eighth for two RBI and Arizona scored again in the bottom of the inning as Sedbrook homered to left.

With two outs in the ninth, Stovall picked up two more RBI on a single through the left side and Foote added a run with a double down the left line but that is all the Lobos could get, falling 19-16.

Ryan Perry earned the win for Arizona, throwing 2.2 innings of relief for five hits, two runs, two walks and a strikeout. Coltrinari suffered the loss, going 2 innings for three hits, seven runs (5 earned), three walks and a strikeout.
