ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The final day of the UNM Balloon Fiesta had tough matches set up with the Lobos facing off against U.S. Air Force Academy, and New Mexico State. By the end of the day, the final matches to be played were UNM against USAFA.
Ben Dunbar arrived in the finals of flight "A" by defeating USAFA's Joey Brandt, NAU's Rob Pezzuto, and UA's Carlos Bermudez. The showdown between Ben Dunbar and USAFA's Lance Wilhelm began at 10:15 this morning to decide who was going to walk away with flight "A" championship.
In a close first set tiebreak, Wilhelm won 7-6. Dunbar played well in the second set with the score being 4-3 with Dunbar only behind by one game. Wilhelm kept at it however and finished the second set with victory with a score of 6-3. Wilhelm won the match 7-6, 6-3.
Ben Dunbar was not through with USAFA's Lance Wilhelm as there was still one more match for doubles with the two competing again for the finals. Dunbar/Hignett journeyed through the draws with wins over NAU's Brown/Martin, and NMSU's Denele/Pfister. The duo was walked over to the finals and it is there that they were to face USAFA's Taylor/Wilhelm.
Dunbar/Hignett played outstanding tennis with down-the-line winners, backhand volley winners, and overheads ending the points just as soon as they started. Taylor/Wilhelm could only win two games with the way Dunbar and Hignett were playing on the court today. Dunbar/Hignett won the finals match with a score of 8-2.
"It was a good tournament this past weekend," Head Coach Alan Dils said. "We had guys make it to the semifinals in both main draw and consolation. All the guys played great tennis and I'm really looking forward to stepping up our game just one step further in the tournaments to come."
The Lobos next tournament will be at the ITA Regional starting on October 19, 2011.
