The University of New Mexico men's golf team shot a 4-over 288 in the final round to finish in sixth place at the 2008 Mountain West Conference Championships today. The Lobos ended the 54-hole event at 16-over par (296-284-288=868) and 18 shots behind champion Colorado State (288-284-278=850, -2) at the Tucson National Golf Club (par-71, 7,136 yards) in Tucson, Ariz. Junior Jon Sauer led New Mexico in the individual standings, tying for 18th at 5-over (74-73-71=218) after an even-par 71 today.
Sauer was very steady in his round today, recording two birdies and two bogeys. He was 1-under after a birdie at 16, but gave that shot back on the par-3 17th to finish even. UNLV's Eddie Olson set the pace with a 4-under 209 (70-69-70).
Junior Steve Saunders continued to fight back after his opening round 82 with a 2-under 69 today. He tied for 21st in the individual standings at 6-over (82-68-69=219). After going out in even-par, Saunders eagled the par-5 10th hole to start the back nine. He posted a birdie on 11 and was 3-under for the round through 12 holes. He stumbled with a double-bogey on the 13th but managed a birdie on the 17th to finish at 2-under. Saunders was the only golfer at the Championships to post two scores in the 60s, but was unable to overcome his disappointing first round.
Freshman Tom Carlson dropped four shots today but still tied for 21st overall. He ended his first MWC Championship at 6-over (72-72-75=219). Carlson had five bogeys in his first nine holes to post a 40 on the front side. He did manage to take one shot back on the last nine holes with two birdies and a bogey to finish with a 75.
Sophomore Brandon Putnam shot a 2-over 73 to finish the tournament tied for 26th at 7-over (76-71-73=220). Putnam carded a birdie on 15, but bogeyed two of his last three holes to end the day at 2-over. Fellow sophomore Kyle Nielsen shot a 76 in his final round to tie for 38th overall. He finished the tournament with a 13-over total of 226 (74-76-76).
