New Mexico Postgame Quotes vs. New Mexico State
Sept. 26, 2009
Albuquerque, N.M. - University Stadium

University of New Mexico Head Coach Mike Locksley
"Well obviously I'm disappointed. I have a team that's in that locker room that is very disappointed. New Mexico State did what we needed to do - they took victory. We had three opportunities in all three phases of the game to win the ball game and we didn't get it done. The buck stops here with me. I'm the head coach and I have to find a way to get this thing corrected. There are no excuses for it. We had two chances and we didn't do what we needed to do to win. Our team played with great effort just like we always have and we always will. We also continued to beat ourselves with the penalties and turnovers and you can't beat good football teams doing that. The only way I know how to fix this thing is to come back on Monday and roll my sleeves up and give my guys the best chance to prepare for Texas Tech."

On what he told the players after the game:
"I told them that it should hurt. Losing hurts. We were trying to send the third straight class through here never losing to the Aggies. We had a chance to win seven in a row. We had the opportunity to win the ball game and we didn't take care of it. All three phases played a part in that. We missed the field goal at the end, offensively we dropped a touchdown that could have put it away and defensively we had a fourth down inside our ten-yard line and didn't get the job done. If anyone wants to point a finger point it at me."

On what needs to improve:
"The biggest thing is we need to play smarter. When you have six penalties and I think we had four personal fouls and the one turnover. Defensively, we didn't get off the field on third down. Those are the things we can control. You have to give New Mexico State credit. They took the game. They wanted the game, they came and took it and finished the job. The Lobos didn't today."

New Mexico State Head Coach DeWayne Walker
"Well, our players and our coaches deserve it. These guys have been working their butts off. We started off 1-2 and everybody kind of criticized our victory over Prairie View, but we just stayed focused, continued to keep our eye on the prize and this football team deserved this win."

On the quarterback change from Trevor Walls to Jeff Fleming in the 4th quarter:
"You know, it was something I sent over on the headphones to (offensive coordinator Tim) Rosebach. I said, 'Let's make a change.' We needed a spark. The defense had been playing their butts off and we were getting three-and-outs on offense. We were kind of losing confidence. And I think with about five minutes plus left in the game, we said 'Look, use up all the clock and let's make this our last running drive.' Fortunately it ended up being our last running drive."

On the defense holding the Lobos in critical spots:
"That's what I'm all about. I'm a defensive head coach and we played good defense at UCLA. We want to bring the same type of style here. It was really good to see our guys sticking with it throughout and they deserved to play well tonight."

New Mexico Senior Quarterback Donvovan Porterie
"At times we looked like a team that we should be offensively and defensively. Some things tonight didn't go our way. We had a chance to tie it up at the end and just fell a little short. This is just something we have to learn from and take it as a learning situation."

New Mexico Sophomore Defensive End Johnathan Rainey
"Obviously things didn't go the way we wanted. For the most part we learned a lot about ourselves. We stopped them when we needed to stop them, but in those key situations we let up and we paid for it. We just have to correct it and keep moving forward."
