LAS CRUCES, N.M. --- It was the final day of the NMSU Fall Invitational and Head Coach Alan Dils could not be any prouder of his guys. This weekend tournament included many victories, but not without some defeat.
The duo of McDaniels/ Hegelund was not able to withstand the force of New Mexico State's Stakne/ Ramirez dominating win of 8-2 in the finals match. McDaniels/ Hegelund placed second overall in the tournament.
Samir Iffikhar put up a fighting spirit in the first set of the finals match with Abilene Christian's Hans Hoch with a score of 7-6. He would not be able to keep up that intensity and could only gain one game in the second set, losing 6-1. He also placed second in the tournament.
Mitch McDaniels triumphed with a vengeance against Abilene Christian's Cody McCarty with a score of 6-2, 6-1.
"All in all, this first tournament was a success in many ways for our guys," Dils said. "The guys played with intensity, were able to gain a lot of experience, and I am very proud of them of how they represented UNM this weekend."
The next tournament for the Lobos will be the Midland Collegiate Invitational on September 16-18.
