Tampa, Fla.- The University of New Mexico women's tennis team will hit the road for spring break traveling to Tampa, Fla. and then onto Orlando. The Lobos will play South Florida at 2 p.m. on Tuesday before heading to Orlando to battle Central Florida at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
Scouting South Florida
The Bulls are 8-4 on the season and coming off a 5-2 win at home to Yale. South Florida has won their last three matches. All of their wins but one (a 4-3 win over Texas A&M) have been decided by three matches or more.
The Lobos have an all-time record of 2-2 against the Bulls. The last time these two teams met was Jan. 24, 2009 in Albuquerque. New Mexico defeated South Florida, 4-3.
Scouting Central Florida
The Knights are coming off a 5-2 win, on their home court over UAB.
Their only two losses have been to Florida and Harvard, losing 6-1 to both.
Wednesday's meeting will only be the second time the two teams have faced off. The only other time the Lobos and Knights met was April 2, 1999 in El Paso, Texas. New Mexico came away with the win, 6-3.
The Lobos dropped two matches this past weekend, a heartbreaker to UTEP on Friday and NMSU on Saturday.
In their closest match of the season, New Mexico came within one set of clinching the victory over UTEP.
After losing the doubles point, Kristin Eggleston earned the Lobos their first point with a victory over Ximena Fuentes, 6-2, 6-4.
Anya Villanueva earned her third win of the season over D. Abdrakhmanova at the No. 1 singles position, 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4.
Also clinching a win was Michaela Oldani. Oldani lost the first set to Veronika Makashov, 6-7 (5-7) but came back to win the next two, 6-4, 6-3.
New Mexico fell 6-1 to NMSU. It was only the third loss to the Aggies in program history.
