New Mexico Favored to Win 2011 Mountain West Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -
The New Mexico men's and women's cross country teams were selected to win the 2011 Mountain West Titles, respectively, in a vote by the league's coaches released Wednesday.
New Mexico collected four-first place votes and 22 total points to capture the top spot in the men’s poll, while Air Force (one first-place vote) tallied 21 points to earn second-place honors. Wyoming claimed third-place with 16 total points, while Colorado State finished fourth with 15 points. Boise State (11 points) and TCU (5 points) rounded out the poll, finishing fifth and sixth, respectively.
The Lobos’ women’s team, ranked No. 2 in the country in the 2011 USTFCCCA Preseason Poll, received all seven first-place votes and gathered a score of 49 points to earn the top position in the women’s poll. Colorado State was selected to finish second with 43 points. Air Force claimed the third spot with 34 points, followed by Wyoming, which finished in fourth place with 32 points. Boise State finished fifth (23 points), while TCU followed in sixth place with 17 points. San Diego State (15 points) and UNLV (11 points) rounded out the final two positions at seventh and eighth, respectively.
The New Mexico men's and women's cross country teams swept the 2010 Mountain West Cross Country Championships hosted by Wyoming in Laramie, Wyo. The 2011 MW Cross Country Championships will be hosted by Colorado State in Fort Collins, Colo. on Oct. 29.
