ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Colorado College (6-6-2) pulled out a 3-0 win over the University of New Mexico Lobos (1-9-3, 0-3 MWC) on Sunday at the UNM Soccer Complex. The Tigers got the win despite being outshot by the Lobos, 20-9.
With the game just barely underway, Colorado College's Kelly Sweitzer scored on the first shot attempt of the game at the 4:04 minute mark. Sweitzer took a cross from Sarah Chadwick and sailed the goal just over New Mexico goalkeeper Kristen Winters' head from the top center of the box.
For the rest of the period, possession went back and forth quickly with New Mexico getting off eight shots compared to the Tiger's five. The Lobos had four shots on goal in the period with their best opportunity coming in the 41st minute. Junior forward Coco D'Angelo broke away from all of the Colorado College defenders when she fired her shot at Tiger keeper Meghann Loseke, who made the miraculous diving save.
New Mexico opened the second half with extreme intensity, winning every possession and firing three quick shots. The ball did not see the Lobos side of the field until the 55th minute when Sweitzer got a foot on the ball and took off down the field. Sweitzer dribbled past three defenders and fired her shot from the left side of the field, about 10 yards out for Colorado College's second goal.
The Lobos again pounded on the Tiger's defense and seemed sure to score. The women took seven shots and two cornerkicks in seven minutes but couldn't find the back of the net with one hitting the post and one hitting the crossbar. Loseke also made five incredible saves during the Lobos run, including three saves she had to jump and tip over top of the net.
The ball had not seen the Lobos side of the field since Sweitzer's second goal when Colorado College's Stephanie Kernan scored the final goal at the 71:42 mark. The Tigers' Molly Holmes fed the ball to Kernan who just got out in front of the Lobo defenders and converted her shot just a few feet away from the Lobo goal.
New Mexico and Colorado College battled hard the remaining 20 minutes to end the game. Winter's made three saves on the afternoon while Loseke stopped 10. Sophomore defender Marissa McBride led the Lobos with three shots while classmate forward Nicole Pitcock and freshman Kellisha Rendell added two.
The Lobos return to Mountain West Conference action Friday at 6 p.m. when they host UNLV for Fiesta Night.
