ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- University of New Mexico head coach Don Flanagan announced the signing of Chinyere Nnaji to a National Letter of Intent today. Nnaji, a 6-foot guard out of Plano, Texas, will join the UNM women's basketball program in the fall of 2009.
"She is a true defender and a player with an extreme upside," said Flanagan. "She consistently plays hard and is very athletic with great speed. She is a great compliment to our team and could have an immediate impact."
Nnaji recently completed her prep career at Plano Senior High School where she averaged 13.7 points, 8.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game as a senior. Nnaji, who was coached by Lynn Meger, was a three-year starter for the Wildcats and received numerous accolades. She was a three-time All District selection including first team honors as a freshman and sophomore. She was named the Newcomer of the Year her freshman season and earned All-Tournament honors as a sophomore in the Fort Worth Lions Tournament.
Nnaji signed with UNM over Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Arkansas State, Lamar, Stephen F. Austin and Kansas State.
Nnaji is the fourth signee for UNM this year and will join Caroline Durbin, Jourdan Erkskine and Emily Starks this fall at New Mexico.
