Albuquerque, N.M. --- The best way to turn back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances into three straight is to work hard in the spring. For Lobo volleyball under Jeff Nelson, that's exactly what the past two weeks have entailed as the squad moves on from the departure of a fantastic senior class as it readies for their first spring match, on March 26 at the University of Arizona.
The University of New Mexico volleyball team has made back-to-back NCAA Tournaments, winning 20 matches in each of the last three seasons. While the Lobos lost four seniors, including highly decorated ones in Lisa Meeter, Jade Michaelsen and Taylor Hadfield, the squad will have a solid senior class for next season as well. Allison Buck, Ashley Rhoades and Kelly Williamson will be asked to lead the squad back to the tournament. Buck was named the MWC Libero of the Year following the 2010 season and Williamson was named to the 2010 Third Team Academic All-America.
In addition to the seniors the team, and fans, are thrilled to see some new faces participating. The highly athletic Chantale Riddle, a Roswell, New Mexico native is now practicing with the team after redshirting this fall. Anooher fall redshirt Juliane Hanna will also be looking to get into the mix in the rotation.
After the match next Saturday the 26th, the Lobos will host the 10-team Lobo Invitational on April 2 at the Johnson Center.
