UPDATE - Former University of New Mexico All-American Jeremy Johnson leads a trio of Lobos who will be competing at the USA Cross Country Championships on Saturday in Derwood, Md. Johnson will run the men's open 12K race (12 p.m. Mountain), while current UNM freshmen Lacey Oeding and Allan Pittman will compete in the junior women's 6K (9:45 a.m.) and junior men's 8K (10:30 a.m.), respectively.
Johnson won the 2007 Mountain West Conference cross country title as a senior and went on to earn All-America honors with a 20th place finish in his NCAA Cross Country Championships debut. He also earned a pair of All-America awards with seventh place finishes in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Track Championships in 2007 and 2008. The Albuquerque Manzano product will represent Bloomington-based Team Indiana Elite in Saturday's race.
Oeding earned MWC Women's Freshman of the Year and first team all-MWC honors this past fall after finishing second at the MWC Cross Country Championships to lead New Mexico to its first conference title. The Jasper, Ind. product, who also earned all-NCAA Mountain Region honors, scored in all six races in her rookie season. She was the No. 3 runner for the Lobos in their 18th place finish at the NCAA Championship meet.
Pittman was the No. 1 runner for the nationally ranked Los Alamos (N.M.) Hilltoppers as a junior and senior before redshirting last fall in his first collegiate cross country season. He was fourth at the 2007 class 4A state cross country meet, leading No. 8 Los Alamos to an upset victory over U.S. No. 1 Albuquerque Academy. Pittman went on to finish 11th, leading Los Alamos to a second place finish at the 2007 Nike Team Nationals Meet.
All races will be held at the Agricultural History Farm Park in Derwood. The top-six finishers in each race who are available to compete at upcoming international competitions will qualify for the USA National Team.
