Therkelsen Named To ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Senior Kelly Therkelsen earned her third consecutive bid to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District team this afternoon. Therkelsen placed on the second team for the second straight year after placing on the third team as a sophomore.

Therkelsen, holding a 4.13 GPA with a major in Political Science, has had a tremendous career wearing the cherry and silver. A four-year starter, Therkelsen's competed in 375 games over 105 matches. She proved to be one of the best blockers in New Mexico history. Her 327 total blocks and 317 block assists are the second most at UNM. She is also ninth in attacks with 2,469. Last year, she recorded the third most block assists in a single season, forcing back 120.

Therkelsen has also been successful in the classroom. She is a three-time Mountain West Conference Scholar Athlete and three-time Mountain West all-academic team honoree.

In order to qualify for nomination, the athlete must be a starter or important reserve with legitimate athletic credentials and at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) in both undergrad and graduate work. She must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at the institution and must have completed at least one full academic year at that institution.
