FORT WORTH, Texas --- The University of New Mexico baseball team never recovered from a 5-0 deficit in the first inning against TCU on Sunday and lost in Fort Worth, 19-3. The No. 18 Lobos drop to 25-8 overall and 5-4 in the Mountain West Conference, tied with BYU for third place. No. 22 TCU improved to 19-9 and 6-3, tied for first place with San Diego State.
The Lobos cut the TCU lead to 5-2 with a run in the second, an RBI double by Brian Cavazos-Galvez to score Ryan Honeycutt, and a run in the fifth, a Daniel Gonzalez sacrifice fly to score Rafael Neda.
But TCU let loose in the bottom of the fifth with nine runs, including two grand slams, to jump out to a 14-2 lead.
UNM added one more run in the sixth, an RBI single by Honeycutt to score Max Willett, 14-3. TCU added five more runs over the seventh and eighth innings for the final.
Honeycutt led the Lobos with two hits, a run scored and an RBI.
New Mexico returns to action on Thursday, April 9 against MWC foe Utah for the first in a three-game series at Lindquist Field in Ogden, Utah.
