ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- New Mexico freshman Alexis Ball scored the game-winner midway through the opening period Tuesday night to lift UNM past Arizona State, 1-0 at the UNM Soccer Complex. Ball scored her third goal in three games and helped the Lobos improve to 5-2-2 overall. UNM remains undefeated against non-ranked opponents and collected its fourth shutout of the year. The Sun Devils dropped to 4-4 overall with the loss.
"I'm very proud of this team and they showed great character tonight against Arizona State," said UNM head coach Kit Vela. "The team is very young and continues to step up in big situations. I'm impressed with their ability to find themselves after two overtime matches Friday and Sunday on the road. We exchanged chances in the first half and held strong defensively to pull out the victory."
Ball's goal came in the 25th minute on a cross from junior Krista Peterson. Peterson found Ball on the right side and fired the shot to the far post. Ball leads the team with three goals this season. Ball led UNM with four shots.
Sophomore Kiani Wong started in goal for New Mexico and was outstanding. Wong made her fourth appearance of the season and played the full 90 minutes. The Honolulu, Hawai'i native collected a career-high nine saves and improved to 3-1 this season. The shutout over the Sun Devils was her second this season.
ASU outshot the Lobos, 22-9, but could find the net against a stingy Lobo defense. The Sun Devils fired 13 shots in the second half and finished the match with nine shots on goal.
The Lobos return to action Sunday, Sept. 30 at Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, Ariz. The match is slated to start at 1 p.m. MT with results posted on www.GoLobos.com.
