ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- The University of New Mexico volleyball team lost a tough match to Gonzaga, 3-2, in the championship of the Comcast Lobo Invitational. The Lobos are now 9-2 on the season as they begin Mountain West Conference action at Colorado State on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m.
Junior outside hitter Jeanne Fairchild was named to the all-tournament team, along with freshman outside hitter Lisa Meeter. Fairchild recorded a career-high 30 kills and 64 attack attempts against Gonzaga, while Meeter had her third double-double of the tournament with 18 kills and 14 digs. Meeter's 18 kills tied her career-high.
New Mexico won the first game of the match, 30-23, behind six kills by Fairchild and five by Meeter. The Lobos also outhit the Bulldogs .250 to .033 to take a 1-0 lead.
In Game Two, Gonzaga took the win, 30-27, after holding off the Lobos when they got the game tied up at 25.
Game Three went to the Lobos, 31-29, in a battle that had 14 ties and four lead changes. The final tie came at 29-29 on a kill by Gonzaga's Becky Jones. Meeter followed with a kills to up the score to 30-29, then served, forcing a Gonzaga error for the game win.
The teams battled again in Game Four to a 13-13 tie. Gonzaga then went on a 12-4 run to pull away from the Lobos for the 30-22 win.
The Lobos had an 11-8 lead in Game Five before Gonzaga tied the game up at 13. A Gonzaga kill and a Lobo attack error finished the game at 15-13.
"We didn't lose this afternoon because of what Gonzaga did, we lost because of what we did," said Lobo head coach Jeff Nelson. "Every time we got a lead, we made a couple of hitting or passing errors, and we have to fix that trend. I thought we out-played them in a lot of areas."
