DALLAS, Texas---The University of New Mexico women's soccer team fell to SMU, 1-0 on Sunday afternoon. The loss was the Lobos' first of the season, bringing their record to 4-1-3.
Senior Liz Lambert had two of the Lobo's three shots on goal in the matchup as New Mexico struggled to create scoring opportunities. The other shot on goal came from junior Jennifer Williams. The Mustangs outshot the Lobos 22 to 9 throughout the game.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kelli Cornell had six saves in the game, but was unable to stop a header by SMU's Logan May from finding the back of the net in the 77th minute.
"It's tough when you have been physically beat-up the past two weekends on the road," head coach Kit Vela explained. "These teams play a physical style that is difficult to play soccer against. Now we just have to rejuice and regroup for another weekend on the road."
The squad will travel to Missoula, Mont. to take on North Dakota in the first game of the Montana Tournament on Friday, Sept. 17 at 3 p.m. New Mexico's second game of the tournament will be against Boise State at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 19.
